The Government of Alberta has released a new survey for public consultation on increasing Energy Efficiency in the Alberta Building Code. Once the Provincial Government has gathered the responses to this survey, they will prepare proposed changes to the Alberta Building Code in co-operation with the Safety Codes Council. The Cityof Calgary is doing a survey on secondary suites, which has been a controversial issue at city hall recently. There is a grant program, which despite being quite high in dollar figure, is very prohibitive to actually building a legal suite because of the regulations that homeowners are required follow. The federal government has an Ecoenergy Retrofit Program that offers grants up to $5,000 per household. Climate Change Central is running the alberta government’s energy-efficiency rebate programs, which includes grants up to $10,000 for new homes, $100 for clothes washers, $200 for home energy audits, $3,000 for insulation, $300 for domestic water heater and $600 for furnace/boilers. some of these grants tie into the federal ecoenergy retrofit Program. Monday, October 5, 2009 - What is The First-Time Home Buyers' Tax Credit (HBTC)

For 2009 and subsequent years, the federal government has introduced a new non-refundable tax credit, based on an amount of $5,000, for certain home buyers that acquire a qualifying home after January 27, 2009 (i.e., closing after this date). After December 31, 2009, mid-efficient forced air furnaces - with an efficiency of less than 90% AFUE - will no longer be available.
