Friday, October 30, 2009 - Energy Efficiency in the Building Code

The Government of Alberta has released a new survey for public consultation on increasing Energy Efficiency in the Alberta Building Code. Once the Provincial Government has gathered the responses to this survey, they will prepare proposed changes to the Alberta Building Code in co-operation with the Safety Codes Council. Friday, October 23, 2009 - Secondary Suites

The Cityof Calgary is doing a survey on secondary suites, which has been a controversial issue at city hall recently. There is a grant program, which despite being quite high in dollar figure, is very prohibitive to actually building a legal suite because of the regulations that homeowners are required follow.  So far, it looks like that there have been only four people in the entire city in the last 18 months, that have successfully, legally created a secondary suite using the grant.  Now the ... The federal government has an Ecoenergy Retrofit Program that offers grants up to $5,000 per household. For 2009 and subsequent years, the federal government has introduced a new non-refundable tax credit, based on an amount of $5,000, for certain home buyers that acquire a qualifying home after January 27, 2009 (i.e., closing after this date). After December 31, 2009, mid-efficient forced air furnaces - with an efficiency of less than 90% AFUE - will no longer be available.
